"Lades! You're getting my old iPhone." announced my friend Tim, "Time to step it up lades, time to step it up." He and my friend Brad are early adapters, especially of Apple products, and I've been the lucky recipient of their hand me downs. I was still using the first cell phone I ever bought, an old reliable Nokia flip phone. My students laughed at me whenever I pulled it out of my pocket, it took hours to compose a text. No apps. No email. No camera. The apps and email on my 4s have been a mixed blessing. The camera has been an un expected pleasure. It's provided a daily means of paying attention, or as Saul Bellow said an "arrest of attention in the midst of distraction." I've found myself drawn to objects and architecture. Maybe it's because there's so many people running around in my other work.
