More to say about this poem, this time, the writing of this poem, but just a note that it's been published on Lamda Literary Review in their Poetry Spotlight. Thanks to Jameson Fitzpatrick for having is published to today, Dec 1, on World Aids Day.
For all my lost brothers. We all miss you. Every day.

Here's the Poem.

Spent a wonderful friday afternoon leading a workshop at the Stanford Storytelling Project. Great group of folks around the table, wonderful writing, interesting conversation. Plus a lunch with one my favorite people and former SFSU student Natacha Ruck who's the project administrator. And a t-shirt too!! Check out their website.

Back in rehearsal for Wether to Weather. Tore apart a scene last night (there's a hurricane, so fitting).
Put it back together. Sending off the rewrites this morning. My script from last night.

That is what matters, baby.

I came across this quote this summer, maybe on facebook?
It stopped me. With its eloquence. With its truth.
I typed it up and it's been sitting on my trunk/coffee table all summer. It's still there.

"Oh, Jesus, I have to stop you right now. I love you dearly: You're a smart and sweet man, but you are so wrong about what matters and where the eyes should visit. The things you find so important - the attention, the prizes, the approval - yes, they matter, and never so much than when they disappear. But I'm old now, and I've walked a long and rocky road, and what really mattered, what should matter most to you, is the rare and gorgeous experience of reaching out through your work and your actions and connecting to others. A message in a bottle thrown toward another frightened, loveless queer; a confused mother; a recently dejected man who can't see his way home. We get people home; we let them know that we're here for them. This is what art can do. Art should be the arm and the shoulder and the kind eyes - all of which let others know you deserve to live and to be loved. That is what matters, baby. Bringing people home."      Tennessee Williams
